I have a 1999 bmwf650 funduro 79,000miles,
Automotive tire Bicycle part Analog watch Rim Wood
Tire Wheel Automotive tire Building Wood

that has started having problems in the transmission or clutch. I'm trying to determine which.

When under load, going up hill, something will slip and the bike looses all momentum and the sound is that of gear cogs rapidly slipping past each other. It's like a "ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ" and no power but engine is fine.

I do think I may have been using too thick of oil as I always have problems starting in the colder, usually 55deg to 63deg, weather.

I pulled out the clutch and it is pretty worn. I'll try to post a picture.

When I have drained the oil the last couple times I have found metal shavings on the plug about a 1/2in (13MM) long.

I don't want to invest more money in the clutch if the bike if the problem is the gear box. I can't afford to do both at the moment.
