I'm hoping for some advice on my bike value and whether to sell it privately seeing I've been offered only £2k for trading it in from 1 dealer so far  !
The BMW dealer said he'd pass on the bike to a trader seeing it was high mileage albeit with FBMWSH. So here's asking for your thoughts  .
It's an early 2004 BMW 650GS Dakar with ABS, Heated Grips, Engine Bars, Centre Stand, Touratech Chain Guard, Scottoiler & Datatool System 3 alarm/immobiliser. It has a FBMWSH with no expense spared, it's had the 24,000mile service, has 25k on the clock and in good condition. I'm the second owner.
So would you conveniently trade it in for £2k!.......or sell privately, I'm not quite sure what it would get privately so any advice would be welcome. I was thinking around the £3.5mark from what I've seen??
Anyone with experience/advice of trading in and selling would be appreciated. I await the offers of tuppence and a boiled sweet!
Hello,
I reckon £3500 is probably a bit steep. I just bought a 55 plate (gs not dakar) with heated grips and ABS and just over 4 thousand miles on the clock for £3650. You should get a lot more than 2 selling it privately though.
Hope this helps as a guide. (or maybe I paid too much!!
I recently sold a 2001 GS, for £2550 with 20000 on the clock. It had lots of extras too. I dont really think extras will add too much value but they will definitly help to sell a higher mileage bike. From a traders point of view, i dont think theyd pay you any more if it had a solid gold engine and everlasting tyres.
They just offer you bottom book (trade in) price.
You should sell it on this site if you have the time to do it.
I would have thought £2500 to £3000 depending on condition.
Just my opinion.
Remember that a dealer is obliged to give some sort of warranty with any machine that he sells, so as a minimum he will have to fully check the machine in his workshop & clean it before putting it in his showroom, which he also has to pay for.
How long is his capital going to be tied up before the bike sells, & how many other overheads are involved?
Oh, & he has to make a living too!
Hope this explains why trade-in values appear to be an insult at times, but in the real world, private sales have always been better, as long as the timing is right.
Good Luck with the sale, & what are you looking to change to?
Well that is the burning question. I'm thinking of the F800ST or R1200GS (bit expensive to buy and run though). Completely different bikes, I've tested a 1200gs for a few days last year and loved most of it, just need to try out the F800. I've had enough of wind blasting into my face and a lack of motorway power/comfort. I'll probably curse what I get for riding in London, the Dakar is perfect for that.
Unfortunately no bike does all, and that's my biggest problem, fussy ba**ard I know!
Yep, agree with all the above - sell it privately. Dealers would rather not have your trade-in, unless they can do very little to it and shift it straight out for a quick profit.
Your best bet in establishing value would be to look around at what's up for sale and similar - then pitching it in there somewhere.
Since when has 25k been regarded as high mileage, you could say it's have above average annual mileage but it's not high, especially with a well maintained Rotax engine. I paid £3.1k for a 54 GS in good condition with service history, and 9.2k on the clock last May and I considered this to be a fair price.
If you can wait a while, don't think of selling the bike privately until the weather warms up and people are more likely to want to ride a bike. The dealership price for a new bike won't change hat much in comparison.
Id have thought a dealer would consider 25000 high mileage? As they will be putting a warranty on this bike.If i was buying a bike with 25000 on it id consider it high.
But id also expect the dealer to tell you "25000 is nothing on an engine like this" if they were trying to sell it to you.
I paid just over 3K last autumn for an 04 GS (not Dakar) with FBMWSH and the same extras as yours but lower miles (17,000). I thought that was a fair price. I would have thought you should get similar privately especially with the better weather coming (We hope!)
Just bought an 04 gs twin-spark with 13000 on clock for £2350 on eBay - bargain! Mind you, it's got a Cat D against it but this was only a broken gear lever, peg and a few minor scratches. Of course the Cat D blights it a bit on resale, but I'm intending to keep it. Having been looking for a while, I'd have thought £3k for a perfect one would be achievable.
Whack it on eBay with a reserve of £3k and a buy-now price of £3250 and see what happens.
Oh, this is my first post so I've arrived! :howdy:
Congratulations on your buy Marshyboy, I hope she serves you well!
I'll probably put mine up for sale in a couple of weeks. It looks like £3k is the magic number - just looking around to see how much the Dakar bit is worth over the standard GS.
I can't imagine selling or buying a bike over ebay, but I guess everyone else does it!
I sold a car for £9500 on ebay and the buyer had not even viewed it!!!
Theres no way i would have commited myself to that, but the car was as good as described ,it had only done 9000 miles.
Treat ebay as a tool, its just like autotrader really, use your common sense and dont trust anyone till you have the money in your hand.
Thanks BBB. Just took it into Coopers for a 12k service plus new chain, front pads and a few missing bits to be fitted. Will be digging for another few hundred to pay them but still a good bike within budget and still below my limit.
I think it's a factory lowered as well, great as I'm a shortarse - it's certainly lower than the 30" it's supposed to be. Anyone know if there's a way of checking via chassis number?
When your at the dealers, ask them, they can check it off the chassis no to tell you what options it had on it when it left the factory.
