I have a F650gs (twin).

I am riding up to Scotland in early June and was hoping to run a GPS from the power socket.

I've read somewhere that i might need additional wiring to enable me to power a GPS, is this the case?

What can i power from the socket?

Any help much appreciated

Thanks in advance

The position of the socket may make a difference. The one on my 2 Spark single is on the frame down-tube to the left of the engine. When I tried running a Sat Nav from this, vibration and the angle of the socket, meant that the plug worked loose with monotonous regularity  so I had it wired permanently to part of the lighting system in the main loom (don't ask me what, as "electrickery" is not my strong suit, & someone who knew what he was doing did the job, which is still working some 10 years later).

I have used a Din connector on an Optimate charger to charge the battery, and have a small Touratech inspection light which works fine.

12v power supply

William909,

You can run your GPS from the power outlet behind the ignition without any bother. It is linked to the canbus system and will power down shortly after the ignition is switched off (not sure how long it stays live, but a search on UKGSer for that info will en-lighten you)

On my F8GS and my F650GS twin, I connected up a fused battery charging lead direct to the battery and I run my gps from that supply without any bother.

just thought i would add to this.
Replaced the battery on my F800gs 3 weeks ago after it going flat.
Though 4 yrs old so time for a new one.
Not had bike out last 2 weeks till needed it last Wednesday
Battery flat but charging system ok.
3Weeks ago wired a sat nav up to the specific connector for it on top of the battery.
There is a convertor half way along the satnav power cord to reduce the cuurent from the bike down to the sat nav voltage.
This stops the can bus system shutting down completely and causes a parasitic drain.
The satnav powers down shortly after switching ignition of but the convertor still draws current and keeps the canbus awake.
Today had to rewire sat nav through a micro relay to eliminate the current drain.
Worth checking for a drain if connecting up to the specific sat nav connector and save yourself a flat battery.
