Looking at buying a 2002 Dakar for some on and off road fun and wanted to get some advice on what to look out for when viewing the bike? Are there any obvious weak points or common problems?

The one I have in mind has only done 4K miles in 20 years so I guess it has spent a lot of time in a garage.

Alao any view on if I should hold out for a later twin spark model with ABS - is there much of a difference and are they a better bike.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Jono,
Depends if those 4,000 miles were (genuine?) harsh, ex off road school?
If generally good condition for that low mileage , any SH? One owner or a few ?
Suggest look at FAQ's here for others experience, I would look at steering head bearings, minimal grease when came off production line meant they wore out fairly quickly, owners dismantle, rgrease some fitted grease nipples to aid servicing, same with rear suspension bushes, also seals tend to wear , let in crud, water, accelerating wear. Water pump seals can cause issues, again preventative maintenance pays
Also look at plug lead for corroding, damp ingress. Brakes freeing OK after application? Rear m/cylinder external seal boot wears letting in water etc, causing sticking on. Original tyres probably cracked if so, replace!
Later twin spark wil have more miles unless v lucky, torque bit lower in rev range due to extra plug and mapping, some report slight btter MPG. Otherwise above applies to these later ones too.
