    Default LH indicator stays on

    Hi all,
The bike was parked up, not in use. No key in and I found it with the left hand indicator staying on. Only way to stop it was to disconnect the battery. Wasn't flashing?
Bike ran , turned off ,still on.
Disconnected the battery left it awhile in case it was a software thing ,reconnected battery indicator still on ,left hand.
    Any ideas
    MK66.

First off, what bike do you have? It's worth clarifying this at the start of the thread because the wiring system is different for the various models.

Assuming the bike is a pre-2004 F650GS, the indicators are normally powered up via the load relief relay - that is, when the ignition switch is turned on, this relay is energised and this switches power to the indicator circuit and to the headlight circuit and brake circuits.

The first question is: when you find the LH indicator on with the ignition switch off, is anything else active such as the headlight or the brake light switches? Also are any of the dash indicator bulbs on.

With the ignition on, does the indicator switch do anything or does the LH indicator simply stay on and the RH indicator do nothing?

If the light isn't flashing but stays on all the time, it may be getting power (via a short) from another circuit which is finding earth through the indicator bulb.

As AWJDThumper said - let us know what year/model your bike is.

For example, if it's a later year with hazard flashers, that would be another level of complexity where faults could lurk.

Just to be clear: does the RH indicator work normally only with the ignition on?

The wiring and functioning of the indicator and hazard warning circuits for the F650GS twin spark are a little complex and includes 3 x relays and 3 x diodes. Unfortunately, you will probably have to get at the diodes and relays to fault find which are mounted under a cover in front of the battery.

The first thing I would check is that the hazard warning light switch is not in the ON position. If that is ok, I would probably start by removing the flasher relay and the two hazard warning relays to check that this turns off the RH indicators since, with the relays removed, no power should be able to get to the indicator and hazard warning light circuits.

Depending on what you find when you remove the relays will determine what needs to be done next.

    Hi
Yes the RH only works with ignition on.
Not aware of any hazard lights.
Taken the battery out and wired it up so it was live and pulled the 3 yellow relays out one at time, also the black, not the Green one.But didn't turn the indicator off at any stage.
    Which is the indicator relay.
    Many Thanks

The 2 x yellow relays at the front left should be the hazard warning relays - if they are there then you must have hazard warning lights. Have you not got the rocker switch mounted above the handlebar clamps?

The flasher relay should be on a bracket mounted on the cover above the other relays if your bike is the same as mine. I would take all 3 x relays out and see whether the LH indicator still stays on. If you have hazard warning lights, see if they work with the ignition on. When you switch the ignition off, the hazard lights should stay on.

You could also try unplugging the instrument cluster (which will unplug the connection to the indicator signal lamp) and see if this turns the LH indicator off.

This will test whether the LH indicator is being powered through that circuit from a short.
