I was trying to get a K1100LT after my Triumph Trophy but went for a F650 in the end. But do still like the big bikes such as the K100 and K75. If finances were better i may get one.
Gareth.
I have a K100LT and it is a great bike but like all big bikes it is very heavy to move around at walking pace, this disappears once on the move. Build quality is second to none. "The Flyin' Brick" describes them perfectly. These bikes are now well priced and if you do find a good one go for it when your finances are improved, but do try to keep your f650 as well, as I have done.
I had a k100rs (1989) which I ran for over 12 years, utterly amazing reliablilty, yes a bit on the heavy side, but weight is low down. It was a great all rounder, even very adapt at London commuting as mirrors were quite low and went underneath the mirrors of transit vans...
Wish I hadn't sold it but 'we' needed a new boiler at the time...
I think they are the biggest bargain you can get, £1000 will buy an excellent condition bike. servcing at home is a doddle as well.
I had a K100 but found it too heavy when 2 up and loaded, much preferred the K75, much smoother and more agile, I had 4 at different times, the last one for 10 years, wish I still had it, took us all over Europe many times, I like my F650 though.
I've had 5 K100RS's as others have said utter reliability. I've had more trouble with my brand new K12GT in its firsts year than I did with any of my K 100 RS's over 17 years of riding.
Yes they certainly can get a move on. But I think the days of the big bikes are over. The running costs are really starting to bite in this recession. Why hasn't any manufacturer brought out a super economical diesel motorcycle?
If it has been regularly serviced then no problem for 90k miles. Yes, the farings can be removed which will considerably reduce the weight of the bike, but you will need a headlamp and mirrors.
90000 isn't particularly high for the old K series, my neighbour had a k100 with 270,000 before a car destroyed it.
Yes you can de fair them but why? It's an excellent touring fairing and you'd be devaluing it But the basic bike is the same throughout the range so you can fit no fairing, a cockpit one, a sports one and the large one you have
Thanks Steve
The one I have seen is on eBay for £650. Cosmetically it's a bit rough but I'm not too bothered about that, I'm sure it can be gradually improved. The half fairing is cracked as is a mirror but I expect a stock mirror could be put on. It's a lot heavier than my superdream but I understand that it carries it's weight low and doesn't feel heavy on the road. There's also a lovely one on eBay but at nearly 3 times the price!
ran a k100rs for three years as a commuter 700mile per week. replaced with k 1200rs had very few issues with both k100 have a earth point left hand side which can give bizzare problems indicator mind of their own horn stops working also the original fuses can look perfect and pass a continuity test but dissconect when loaded so take them out and chuck. buy some mirror cables as a very light tap will have it off and the glass is 25.00 and the pod 45.00 i used wire stay from a fishing shop for 50p each. the k1200rs also have a thottle sticking issue ( very entertaining on a 130hp bike.the issue is that oil used to lube the cab goes sticky and the pulley oxidises and you need to carfully remove the panels and use so brake cleaner with a brush to clean and then a small wd 40 only, I fitted a aeroflow screen which was fantastic and stable at 130 mph. original bars are a killer with the harsh telelever front unusually the rear tyres last longer than the fronts but great bike both and easy to service although the air filter on the k12 is alot of dissmantling dont believe all the waffle about taking the panels off it not that bad. the best solution to stopping damage to panels on rebuild buy some clear washers from a ducati dealer.
Thanks for the info Dave. I understand you have just bought F650. I have looked at those too, would probably be a better choice than a k75 for me. I have just posted as a newbie on the new section of the forum about which bike to look for?
Only if you have long motorway rides then k bike is more suited, but the F650 is almost impossible to beat as an all round,do anything, go anywhere machine. So I would recommend the F650.
As noted in my introduction, I've had a K75 for 24 years and would never part with it. Now just picked up the F650 Dakar and am interested in comparing. . once it warms up a bit here.
I suspect it will be like comparing chalk with cheese!
