Default What is the best oil?

Hi folks,

What are the top 3 best motor oils for a F650GS single twin-spark engine?

BMW manual states never use fully synthetic. But doesnt explain why?

I thought fully synthetic was the best oil to use?

Cheers,
DouGSter

There is no top 3

BMW doesn't need to explain why not to use synthetic. They tell you what to use. I have heard some stories about synthetic damaging seals on certain engines but not seen any prove of that.
I have seen though what some synthetic oils do better as other oils. They clean the engine better and make all the dirt in an engine come loose which if it happens at once can block up the lubrication system. This is something you try to avoid.
An other reason not to use synthetic is that it is expensive and still has to be changed every year so if you don't do a lot of miles the cost for oil is quite high.
The other thing is that these engines are so good that they don't burn oil so that is another reason that it would be just throwing money away.
I have had a Suzuki that burned less oil when using synthetic on long runs during the holidays in really warm weather. But these rotax engines don't burn oil. So spend your well earned money on something else is my advice.

Thanks Ton. I meant what brands do people think are best?

My local mechanic swears by Bel Ray. What do you use?

I use Halfords semi synthetic 10- 40, quite cheap for 5 litres at £21.99p.

It wont do any harm to use synthetic, but its overkill to do so - a good semi is fine.

I usually use Motul, i know a fair few race engine builders/tuners and they swear by it, so its good enough for me and my customers.
Halfords stuff is good too though, and quite cheap.

Fully synthetic oil 'can' cause clutch slip. Best to stick to a bike specific oil. For a bit more reading have a look at http://faq.f650.com/FAQs/OILFAQ.htm#...the%20GS/Dakar. I've always used Castrol Power 1 GPS 4T 10W/30, which is semi synthetic, without any problems.
