We used a special grease for brake parts when putting them together. But even if you coat the rod that goes trough the rubber with some grease you will keep most of the water out. A bit of chaingrease will create some sort of seal against the water. The rubber should be okay. But vaseline won't do any harm.
If you sometimes press the pistons back in the caliper and look at the rod in the master cyinder when you release the brake you know that they are still free. But do press the pedal down a few times after as you will need to build up the pressure again after.

Default Rear Brake Caliper Removal

Hello Chaps!

While I'm waiting for my new master cylinder to arrive, I thought I'd have a poke around the rear brake caliper (for the first time) and remove it for a clean-up.

But where the heck is the mounting bolt(s) located to remove it from the hangar? The pdf manual doesn't seem to indicate where the mounting bolt(s) is/are - what am I missing here? Do I have to remove the rear wheel in order to get the rear caliper off?

If I could get to my bike and it would be the same on the classic as on the GS I would be able to tell you but walking is still is a bit of a problem here. When you have removed the pads can the caliper not slide off. Otherwise you might have to remove the wheel completely. But I would think that you can get to most places for cleaning purposes with the caliper in place.

Default Wheel off time

Thanks Ian, it really had me foxed today,... does the rear wheel come out easy enough with the bike on the centrestand or does she need to be jacked up higher?

The wheel comes out no problem on the centrestand.

Great, thanks Ton - I had to jack my transalp up higher to remove the rear wheel, so wasn't sure if it was the same deal with the gs.

Default MC's in da house!

Hi lads!

The mc has just arrived (below). Is it going to be ok for me to use the same piston thrust rod which exits the bottom of the old cylinder and connects to the brake pedal or do I need to get a new one of those too? Is the piston thrust rod easy to remove from the old cylinder and fit into the new cylinder (if I can use it?)
